the valves of the LP cylinders were loose “due to human error”
Are the valves
reverse-threaded down under, as well?

I’m not sure I understand how the gas got out of the box in the back and into the “cab” or why there’d be an uncapped battery in the cab. I’m guessing the author is unfamiliar with automotive anatomy?

my theory is the uncapped battery was in the back.
otherwise, yeah. it makes no sense
so why they said the cab is a mystery to me.

I’m guessing the batteries were part of the load so they’d have been in the back, with the gas.

I remember this one. A few punters thought it was a terrorist thin g at the time...
This is why you never carry LPG cylinders in an unvented location.
There was a bloke in northern Victoria a few years ago that lost a full 45kg bottle off his ute at speed. The bottle failed on impact with the road and briefly overtook him as it rocketed away. Fortunately, the gas never ignited...

Nine News is not known for its clear grasp of the facts... probably why it's reasonably popular.

How do you accidentally loosen the caps on all three cylinders?

Is “cab” the Australian word for the back of the truck? You know, like “boot” or something?

Do they not have the OPD
safety valves in Oz? I haven’t seen a North American portable tank without one in 20+ years.
Even if you don’t have the valve off, the valve will shut off the flow of propane off
unless there’s an appliance connected to the tank:

According to the police report, t here were three batteries stored in the back of the truck with the propane tanks. One of the batteries had no charge, bare terminals, and signs of arcing on the terminals. Authorities suspect contact with a metal object during transport caused the arcing and was the ignition source.

That makes a lot more sense. “G as leaked into the cabin and ignited by a spark from an un-capped 12-volt battery ” leaves out a step or two.

if you’ve never used propane cylinders before and assume it’s clockwise to close

Yeah I read through the police report. It was very detailed. But they didn’t say what type of batteries were in the truck. I assume standard automotive based on context. It also says they can't say for certain what the cause was but that seems most likely by a long shot according to multiple investigators.

And you neglect to check if there’s any gas escaping, or use your hand to feel the pressure of the escaping gas.
And you ignore all 3 cylinders hissing away at you

Yeah, really need multiple redundancies with propane. There was a similar incident in the 1970s in Canada where an engineering company owner
and his wife were killed in a similar incident - they had stopped for propane before going to
dinner, and the tank
leaked into the trunk. They w
ent to leave the restaurant and the car exploded when the car’s lights were turned on - killing him and his wife. The rules
got a lot stricter with it in Canada after that, they required a backup
cover until the OPD valves came, and they would not let you place the tank in the trunk if you had just filled it.
